Shades of Gray

Shades of Gray

In this world of ours,

This earth swarming with rats

Besieged by darkness

And shedding tears of blood,

There live some…

Who are blind to others’ suffering,

Unseeing, blissfully oblivious,

Living in a world of black and white

Where good always triumphs

And rape, torture, and abuse,

Are cruel truths found only in books,

as unreal and fictitious as fairies and dragons.

Who are deaf to the world’s pain,

Ignorant, uncaring, naïve

Others’ tortured screams fall on their unhearing ears

Blocking out the harsh realities of life

With expensive Apple ear buds,

And Justin Beiber songs.

Who are crippled,

Broken, lifeless, brutally mutilated

Lambs to the slaughter,

Tired of pleading for help,

Of being ignored again and again,

Too weak to do anything,

But wait for the nightmare to end.

In a merciless world like this,

A canvas splattered with shades of black and red,

a horrific depiction of hell itself,

How could any willingly live?

There’s no point in existing.

What is there to live for?

Lost youth, broken spirits, tainted innocence.

Why would any want to endure this?

And yet,

A single hand is offered,

one smile is shared,

bursts of light brighten the pitch black world,

tendrils of darkness flinch back

and give way to vibrant color.

What once was meaningless and vague

is brought into focus and gains new value.

Crisp and fresh replaces what once was muggy and stale.

Hope brightens what once was a dark, thorny path ahead.

And I think to myself,

Perhaps the world isn’t so hopeless after all.

*It was supposed to be a Message of Hope, but writing about darker things appeal to me more, so.... here it is ^^*

This is a poem from a poetry project that my LA teacher assigned a looooooong time ago.
